Hand Bent Glass Neon mounted on plexiglass and wood, 34 x 30 x 7.5” , 2025

On my first trip to Richmond in 2021, I stopped at seven neon shops on my way here, hoping to learn as much as I could. With the plan to have my last stop be Uptown Neon where I would meet Mr. Solyan. On that trip, I brought along my vivacious ninety-year-old grandmother, and during our many pit stops I began noticing the stunning lanterns in towns we passed through. I knew I had to create my own version.

This is the second iteration of the concept, but the first time I’ve made them from clear glass filled with neon, which creates this glowing red light.

This piece was designed and made by Chloe Kottwitz and was exhibited in her solo exhibition, Surroundings, at The Black Iris in Richmond,Va from September 5, 2025-September 28th, 2025.
